History of Tic-Tac-Toe

The game of Tic-tac-toe has ancient roots, with variations played throughout history. Similar games have been found in ancient Egyptian ruins dating back to 1300 BCE. The modern grid and X/O markings became standardized in the 20th century.

In the UK and some other countries, the game is known as "Noughts and Crosses." It was one of the first games programmed for early computers in the 1950s, making it an important milestone in the history of artificial intelligence and game theory.

Despite its simplicity, Tic-tac-toe has been the subject of mathematical analysis and is a perfect example of a zero-sum game. With perfect play from both sides, the game always ends in a draw, which makes it an excellent teaching tool for introducing concepts like game theory and strategic thinking.
